How To Paddle Straight

To maintain a straight course while paddling, it is important to use the straight stroke. This stroke is the foundation of all paddle strokes and the most efficient way to move your boat forward. To perform the straight stroke, place the paddle blade into the water at a perpendicular angle to the surface and pull the paddle straight back towards your hip. Alternate sides with each stroke to maintain a straight course.

To maintain a straight course while paddling, follow these steps:

  1. Start your stroke a little away from the rail.
  2. Angle your blade inward toward your rail.
  3. Drag your blade to your feet with a deep vertical stroke.
  4. Change hands and swap sides occasionally.
