Welcome to Week 10 of our paddle boarding course! This week, we'll be focusing on the fundamental paddling techniques that every beginner should master. These skills will form the foundation of your paddle boarding journey, helping you navigate waters with confidence and efficiency.
1. The Forward Stroke
The forward stroke is the most basic and frequently used technique in paddle boarding. It's how you propel your board forward through the water.
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent
- Reach forward with the paddle, submerging the blade fully
- Pull the blade through the water alongside the board
- Exit the stroke at your feet and repeat on the other side
2. The Reverse Stroke
The reverse stroke is used to move backwards or to quickly stop your paddle board.
- Start with the paddle blade near your feet
- Push the blade away from you towards the back of the board
- Use your core to power the stroke, not just your arms
- Alternate sides for a straight backward movement
3. The Sweep Stroke
The sweep stroke is used to turn your paddle board efficiently.
- For a right turn, start on the left side of the board
- Reach out wide and sweep the paddle in a wide arc
- Use your core to power the stroke
- Finish the stroke at the back of the board
4. The Draw Stroke
The draw stroke helps you move your paddle board sideways, useful for approaching docks or other boards.
- Reach out to the side and submerge the blade
- Pull the blade straight towards the board
- Just before hitting the board, slice the blade away
- Repeat as necessary to move sideways
Practice Tips
- Start in calm, shallow water
- Focus on proper form and balance before increasing speed
- Practice each stroke individually before combining them
- Remember to engage your core and maintain a stable stance
By mastering these basic paddling techniques, you'll be well on your way to becoming a competent paddle boarder. Remember, practice makes perfect, so get out on the water and start paddling!
Next week, we'll focus on Improving Balance and Stability on Your SUP. This crucial skill will help you feel more confident and secure on your board. Happy paddle boarding!
