Welcome to Week 14 of our kayaking course! This week, we'll focus on mastering efficient paddling strokes that are essential for every kayaker. We'll cover three fundamental strokes: forward, reverse, and sweep. These techniques will help you navigate your kayak with precision and ease.

1. Forward Stroke

The forward stroke is the most basic and frequently used kayaking technique. It propels your kayak forward efficiently.

  • Start with the paddle blade near your feet
  • Rotate your torso as you pull the blade through the water
  • Exit the stroke at your hip

Remember, it's more about rotating your torso than using arm strength. This reduces fatigue and increases power.

2. Reverse Stroke

The reverse stroke allows you to move backward or stop your kayak's forward momentum.

  • Start with the paddle blade behind your hip
  • Push the blade forward through the water
  • Use your core muscles to rotate your torso

Practice transitioning between forward and reverse strokes to improve your control over the kayak's movement.

3. Sweep Stroke

The sweep stroke is used to turn your kayak efficiently.

  • For a forward sweep (turning away from the paddle side), start at your toes and sweep in a wide arc to the stern
  • For a reverse sweep (turning towards the paddle side), start behind you and sweep towards the bow
  • Keep the paddle as horizontal as possible for maximum efficiency

Mastering the sweep stroke will greatly enhance your maneuverability in various water conditions.
